A mini meh about….. Mindhorn

Lord of Leisure Posted on May 6, 2017 by The Lord of LeisureMay 6, 2017

My Mindbrain is going…..

Yep, it’s British film time folks, be afraid! Well I say that, but for once, it’s not set in some Georgian large house where the ladies are being all frightfully coy about the gentleman who’s come to visit, or set in World War 2 again for the 3470th time. Nope folks, this time, we’re presented with Mindhorn from the warped minds of Julian Barratt and Simon Farnaby. You may remember them both from the weirdness that was the Mighty Boosh from the BBC back in the day.

But here Julian Barratt pays a washed up actor Richard Thorncroft. He used to play a cop in the 80s who had his eye replaced and somehow got implanted with a new magic electronic eye which could tell when people were lying. Think 6 Million Dollar Man, but just on a British budget of £12. We see some adverts played wonderfully to its fully hammy potential and some awful filming with green screening for an episode. Cue some chat show silliness, some insults to all the cast and Thorncroft buggering off to LA before we come to the present day.

Turns out that back on the Isle of Man where the show was filmed, that people are being killed and the killer wants to talk to Mindhorn. Why? Well this chap on the phone (who goes by the name of “The Kestrel”) has a rather unhealthy obsession it seems with the cop. Only issue is that the washed up actor is stuck in Walthamstow in a crap flat where he can’t get any work whatsoever. Continue reading →

A mini meh about…. John Wick: Chapter 2

Lord of Leisure Posted on April 26, 2017 by The Lord of LeisureApril 26, 2017

It’s brown trousers time!

It’s been a long time since I saw this film. Right at the middle of February as it goes and as I write, it’s the end of March.  In the meantime, various films have come and gone, we’ve cried with laughter and tears at what the world is turning into, and honestly it’s nice to come back to a film like this to get away from it all. John Wick: Chapter 2 has been out for some time and Boy, John (played by Keanu Reeves)  can’t catch a break can he? Having lost his dog and car as well as his wife before all that in the first film, you’d be right in wondering what could possibly be next.

Don’t worry, his dog doesn’t die in this one. This time he’s fighting again due his fridge being out of warranty and his parrot has started swearing. No wait, sorry that’s John Wick Chapter 3.

About four days after the events of the first film, former assassin / clown / dog lover John Wick (once again played by the one, Keanu Reeves) tracks down his stolen car from the first film at a chop shop owned by Abram Tarasov (bloke from Prison Break who now is always the bad guy Peter Stormore), brother and uncle of the Russian people John killed previously. John dispatches Tarasov’s men in a violent fight that while fantastic to watch, does a bit of a number on his car. As in, a number which is hard to explain to your insurance company.

So that’s that then. Back to the quiet life and just carry on. New dog, car getting fixed, and time to retire all over again. Well this is going to be a short film for sure! Continue reading →

Tavern Brawl: An Ancient Recipe

Lord of Leisure Posted on April 24, 2017 by The Lord of LeisureApril 24, 2017

It’s been a very long time since I last did a Hearthstone YouTube video properly or even half-hearted come to think of it! But here it is folks, a brand new video featuring brand new cards from the recent expansion: Journey to Un’Goro. Will I be rubbish? Will there be more of these at some point? Who knows, but let’s see what happens with this one.

A mini meh about…. Power Rangers

Lord of Leisure Posted on April 24, 2017 by The Lord of LeisureApril 24, 2017

Now comes with a creamy custard center. Mmmmm. Eat our f**king donuts!

Bet you never expected to see a review of the Power Rangers film on Ooh Sometimes did you? OK, those of you who follow Twitter and all that, would have been expecting this a long time ago actually! But there’s a good reason why this is now featured here. First of all, who saw the trailer for the new Power Rangers and actually thought, hang on, this doesn’t actually look that bad? I suspect it’s going to be a good number of you as remarkably the trailer showed a lot of changes.

The kids were more grounded. It was to be an origin story for once that would make 3% sense. The music was much more subdued and atmospheric. The effects were not just two guys in rubber monster suits pretending to hit each other. They also only hinted at what the new Rangers would look like too. It was all you would want in a marketing campaign to reboot a franchise that’s been going for decades at this point. That alone made me curious.

I watched a few of the Power Rangers shows when I was tiny, but honestly it passed me by even then. I just remember the terrible fight scenes where the rangers looked like they were having random fits they couldn’t control and they were hitting crap monsters and they were falling over even when they weren’t hit. The bad guys would be better off in Pantomime honestly, such was the level of cheese and silliness!

But for this first in what the producers clearly hope will be a long running film series as well as the TV series ongoing, things are being played differently. It’s set in a crap town that’s still called Angel Grove from the TV series and over time we see different kids turn up, all thankfully covering all races just in case they were to insult anyone. After Jason (Darce Montgomery) gets into trouble something involving a school’s cow……yeah….he’s stuck one day in detention. He meets Billy (RJ Cyler) and Kimberly (Naomi Scott) which is err….jolly good. Continue reading →

A mini meh about…. Logan

Lord of Leisure Posted on April 23, 2017 by The Lord of LeisureApril 23, 2017

Now I’m mad again…. but first I need a nap and a blanket. Damn I’m old….

It’s been a long time since we last looked at Fox’s take on the Marvel universe, actually looking it up, it was 2016’s Deadpool which last fell under my watchful review eye. X Men Apocalypse came and mehed, and in the meantime, Marvel and Sony themselves seem to be heading for completely dominating the comic book genre for the rest of the year. But earlier this year, Fox released something which frankly astonished in quite a number of ways.

It was another X-Men film, but good. Really good. As in contender for one of the best if not the best X-Men film made during Fox’s ownership of the film rights to the characters. Quite a way to start the review of Logan, isn’t it?

So how is this worthy of such praise?

Well let’s set the scene first. It’s been a couple of decades that have passed as we come into the story here, as Logan (for the final time by all accounts, played by the Huge Hugh Jackson) has fallen on hard times. I mean really hard times, as the superhero has gotten older, slower, and drinks himself stupid on a hourly basis. Gone are the glory days of saving humanity. Now all he is now, is a limo driver. During one of his jobs, we get to see some boobies during a night out by a hen party. WOO for the boobies! We’re adult now! Continue reading →
