A mini meh about…. Dunkirk (You won’t like me after this….)
In true epic Hollywood fashion, we have the second WW2 war film to appear for a mini meh in recent days. Given recent events, it does seem to be more relevant, which is shocking to say. Based on the true story of one of the biggest events of World War 2, Dunkirk shows us the mass evacuation of British, French and other troops by civilian boats.
Hitler had everyone surrounded but for some reason couldn’t be arsed to press the advantage more. So the only thing the allied army could do was try and escape back to England.
That really is the entire crux of what we witness during the one hour forty-five-minute runtime as we experience events from three viewpoints over three different points of time. We have a couple of the troops trying to get away, we have the civilians on a small boat heading to Dunkirk to pick up soldiers and finally we have pilots trying to get over and destroy German bombers.
Now, technically, this was a very well put together film, with editing well done, scenes and sound all relevant and not wasted. However, I’m afraid this is where it starts going down the toilet for me, as I must describe what occurred during the viewing for me here. I was bored. Continue reading →
A mini meh about….. Their Finest
In the first of two World War 2 based films upcoming for review, I begin with a tiny British film called Their Finest. Now granted, this was a rather unusual choice for review given that the Marvel juggernaut that is Spiderman: Homecoming was destroying all comers who decided to release within the same month as it at the cinema. Well, for my part, the excuse was; it was this or Transformers: The last Knight with over 7458 explosions in the first 10 minutes. Though then later of course, I did see Spiderman and indeed covered it in a review before this film, so what does that say about my priorities?
So Their Finest then, what’s going on? In 1940, a sexy empowered married Welsh woman Catrin Cole (Gemma Arterton) and a screenwriter with a car salesman mustache Tom Buckley (Sam Claflin) get the hots for one another while working together on a British propaganda film about the evacuation of Allied troops from Dunkirk. Basically this is a film about the subject of another film I’m about to review. This is breaking the fourth wall or something for sure. Continue reading →
2017: A half-way meh I wish I wasn’t having to write….
You may have noticed that of late, the content posted here on the Ooh Sometimes web site here stayed mainly away from the politics of the day. Don’t get me wrong, every now and then when there’s an election or something just completely insane going on, it makes its way back to these pages with a fiery, often ridiculing tone.
Today is one of those days where sadly I am compelled to note write about the latest guff I saw at the cinema or point to a livestream where I am awful at computer games.
Ladies and Gentlemen, for your consideration and discussion, the 45th President of the United States; Donald J. Trump. This was his latest non press conference, in which he was meant to talk about infrastructure before going off to hide in Trump Tower in New York again. As you see here though, he does much more than that;
I hope you watched the entire thing because you really needed to. This was in context to the troubles and murder that occurred in Charlottesville when White Nationalists or Nazis decided to all go out for cake and ice cream but instead, they had a jolly shout out about racist sh*t before starting various amounts of violence against people who don’t like Nazis. You know the type; Normal people, Decent people. One of the Nazis even murdered a woman named Heather Hayer and injured several others with a car. He now awaits punishment, which may indeed still include the death penalty from what I understand, though please correct me if that’s not the case.
On the Saturday that all this had occurred, Trump pretty much decided to not p*ss off the Nazis but everyone else who is normal by saying there was bad action on both sides. BOTH sides. Because he was told to go be nice and condemn the Nazis on Monday, it seems he had a bee in his bonnet because as you will have seen with that press conference, it pretty much all went out the window and he wanted to still be nice to everyone, even to the point of stating that there were very good people on BOTH sides too. Oh and he also made it about him at several points, saying things about the mother of Heather Hayer being happy with what he said, and owning a f*cking winery in Charlottesville. Did you know it’s one of the biggest in the US? No? What a shock!
Remember folks, this is the guy the USA via the Electoral College thought was still mentally stable to be president after this;
What’s even better, our own dear Prime Monster (no typo there I assure you) Theresa May has, while condemning what took place over the weekend in the US, she stopped very short of actually naming Trump and calling him out as being a complete and total sh*tbag. Probably because she still wants to play nice to get a crap trade deal with what’s left of the US after we’ve done ourselves in from Brexit (oh yes, all that insanity is still going on too). He’s still on for a state visit which may never happen as everyone knows he faces a torrent of abuse by normal people if and when he arrives for said visit.
But there’s another reason it shouldn’t happen. The current US administration is unfit for purpose and must go. This is just utterly insane to say that at any point, Nazis were in the right and there are good people among them. This is not right, Trump is not right in the head. I’ve often commented on whether or not he’s just mentally ill given what he does. But after this, no, he’s just a f*cking racist asshole and frankly, should be out on his arse now. He can take the rest of the cronies with him too.
Call a new election, and when vetting candidates, make sure they are nothing like Trump. No Alt-Right, Alt-Tab or whatever they want to be called. Nazis are bad. That’s it. Trump and his evil band of Reich-starters must go. Each day they all stay in power, is another slap in the face to everyone else in the world who, let’s be fair, don’t like Nazis.
Is this what the world has come to? A f*cking repeat of humanity’s greatest f*ck-ups? I’ve used the world insane to describe quite a lot here. That’s because it is. It’s not normal, none of this is normal.
This has to stop. All of this. NOW.

A mini meh about….. War for the Planet of the Apes
War, huh, good god ya’ll! What is it good for?
Making films about Apes taking over the earth by all accounts. Oh and that Dunkirk thingy of which a Mini Meh is forthcoming. Oh how you will hate me after that one…..
But first I must present some finding on War of the Planet of the Apes. It’s is the third in the modern run of the long running film series where at this point, pretty much it’s all gone a bit wrong for humanity. There’s also still no one moaning on a beach asking why they blew it all up yet. I’ve also been calling this film a number of names leading up to actually watching it; Journey to the Centre of the Planet of the Apes, Battle for Planet of the Apes, Apes gone wild…. no wait, forget that last one, you won’t like what you find if you search on Google for that title. A mini meh about…. Spiderman: Homecoming
In many ways, this film really is a true homecoming. The most notable of all is that Marvel finally get their hands (albeit in a shared way) back on the webbed wall crawler we all love and waited to see with the Avengers but didn’t think it would ever possible due to the film rights staying with Sony.
But after the commercial and critical failure of the Amazing SpiderMan 2 some would say, a deal was indeed reached between Sony and Marvel Studios and since Captain America: Civil War, we have had the chance to see what Marvel Studios can do fully with Spiderman when it has the chance to give Peter Parker something meaty to chew on with others.
Of course, this will all be subject to how long Sony will want to play nicely with their Marvel buddies, given their other recent film efforts have not been profitable or indeed well received. So this really had to deliver on so many levels in order to try and keep the web slinger as a fixture in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
And you know what….Spoiler alert, they finally did it after all this time! Sony have finally worked to bring Spiderman back to the world with a vengeance and it’s shocking how well this turned out. It’s fantastic and for more reasons than you might think.
If you don’t want to see any more gushing, then you may want to look away as I’m not going to be able to hold much of it back. We have an excellent Peter Parker in Tom Holland who really does shine as the loser genius who leads the double life as the friendly neighbourhood Spiderman. Continue reading →
A mini meh about….. Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie
This apparently was a thing….. It was a series of books which been adapted for the big screen and worldwide release. Captain Underpants in his first epic movie. Captain Underpants. A hero called Captain Underpants. He flies around in his underpants and a cape. There is shit tons of toilet humour involved……
I have learned so much recently.
Now it’s sunk in more, I can finally bring myself to write about it more here, as well as my gushings about it on a recent Aftermath YouTube video.
We knew just from the initial idea that the Emoji Movie would be a huge pile of poop, so why put ourselves through that awful 90 minute bile and feel cheated for paying for it afterwards? That will be for a future mini meh when it comes up on Netflix and there’s literally nothing else to do in life at all.
Instead, it’s another kids film I decided to descend on, and not be creepy at all in a cinema on a Sunday Morning. I suspect that the two families who dared to venture in early were concerned that they would need to tell the staff about a weird looking hobo sitting in the back row….
So dare I even attempt to portray in simple terms the grandness of such an undertaking here? I shall dare, and damn the consequences of my hubris overreaching and the scorn of my peers! Continue reading →
A mini meh about….. Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets
This was the first real blockbuster to arrive from Luc Besson in sometime if memory serves. Given a lot of the trailer showed an amazing world akin to that of the Fifth Element, a film which at the time wasn’t overly well recieved, did become a cult hit years later, where now,you can’t help but find people who will sing its praises to high heaven.
That’s even including Chris Tucker’s over the top and potentially ear-raping performance as the host who hangs around with Bruce Willis when stuff goes down. Even Gary Oldman’s accent which went all over the place at times, you came to love (I am dis-a-point-ed!). The world created and shown was boombastic, very creative and will leave you with some good memories if nothing else.
So, no pressure for this one then, eh?
So Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets. The title just rolls off the tongue like a roll. Which fell off something. Rolled off….something…. Continue reading →
