A mini meh about…. Baby Driver
You may have seen the last Aftermath Video on Youtube, where I had seen Baby Driver at a preview screening a week ago and basically gushed all over it, to the point of repeating myself over and over again. Watching it back, yeah it was cringeworthy, but it was for good reason. You see, Baby Driver became one of my best pieces of cinematic entertainment for 2017. Why? Well stay tuned and find out why I turned into such a fanboy for one Mr. Edgar Wright.
You see, he kind of got slightly screwed over, if what was uttered from the rumours about Marvel’s Ant-Man was concerned, along with Adam Cornish. While there were still clear elements of humour from the pair, other parts you could consider more normal Marvel. So what’s the director been doing with his time? Well he got a bunch of his favourite songs together and wrote a film around them all! Obvious really!
So the plot of Baby Driver, is that we have ourselves a very talented getaway driver by the name of “Baby” (Played wonderfully by Ansel Elgort, whose name also belongs to a swedish porn star). Seems though that he must be constantly listening to music because of an accident when he was a kid, left him with Tinnitus. So the music is played, just to drown the noise out.
This all leads to a wonderful opening sequence where Baby is playing driver to a motley crew wearing masks (Jon Hamm, Eliza Gonzalez and Jon Bernthal aka the Punisher / Bloke from the Walking Dead) who then rob a bank. Cue one hell of a chase scene, and we now meet happy go lucky crime boss Doc (or Kevin Spacey, hell may as well just say Spacey). Baby owes him money still and is just working to pay him off.
However, Baby meets a lovely waitress called Deborah (Lily James) at a diner and basically proceeds to ask her out, and hopefully get it on with her. Maybe leave behind the ol’ life of crime eh? But no, gentle camper reading this rubbish, do you think Kevin Spacey will let him go? Of course not, and that’s when it goes down a meaner route, courtesy of one mean mother Jamie Foxx (playing a superbly evil dick called Bats)
So basically things happen and we’re taken on a ride of which we’re not fully sure where it will end up. To be honest, it was incredibly hard to be bored during this film. I mean, each scene was very well done. The characters were all interesting, even when they were just talking b*llocks. The chemistry between Baby and Deborah was lovely to see, that they were indeed a believable couple.
All the bad guys were on fantastic form, especially Jon Hamm, who honestly surprised me having a full chracter arc though the film which was all entirely understandable. Jamie Foxx can just be a bad mother lover and it’s a joy to watch. Kevin Spacey, well is just Kevin Spacey so he just turns up and that’s all you need!
The way the film was put together with the music, and the fantastic car chases is a huge standout here. Every piece of music chosen really fitted in with the scene you see and it’s all really welcome. The way the characters sometimes move to the music as well is a subtle joy which will make you smile for sure.
There’s some great laughs (trust me, the masks used for the Armoured Truck Robbery will crack you up…..must resist saying more!), some excellent drama, and it stands up very well as a full on crime story. Even Baby’s foster dad played by CJ Jones is great to watch as he uses sign language with Baby. It’s a wonderful cast, wonderful action, wonderful story and dear god do I want to watch this again.
Ok, there are some strange questions that is easy to miss, but when pointed out, you may go “Oh yeah….”; For example, as why does Deborah just stay on board with Baby when things go south and the bad guys all turn up at the diner where she works? Granted they are both happy together, but it’s clear stuff being going down and she just carries on without asking what is going on right there and then. But you easily forget anything like this very quickly and get pulled into the film even more.
If it looks like I am indeed gushing over this film, it’s because it’s damned good. Damned good to the point of me not even beginning to hesitate in recommending Baby Driver to you all. It’s a great thrill ride, and wonderfully done by Edgar Wright. One can only hope for more exciting stuff in the future. Come on Baby, give me some more sugar! Daddy likes!
