Internet Limbo
Good evening gentle campers, it’s been a while since there was content posted on Ooh Sometimes again, and in the meantime, there’s just been some hearthstone live-streams via Twitch and then afterwards YouTube appearing in the meantime. So what’s been going on in the meantime? Well, there’s been plenty of things personal wise of course, but perhaps the biggest thing of all, will leave you feeling sorrow never felt before….
I’m leaving BT for someone else….it just wasn’t working out, we grew apart, I met someone else, you know how it goes when it comes to these things, sometimes you just have to go with someone else….someone who may love you, give you something back for all your affection….sob…
You see, for some time, I was not able to get the exact same service which I had 10 minutes walk away from my old address and given this was still in one of the world’s capital cities, instead of say the deepest darkest part of the world like Telford (which still has better options for internet by the way) I asked Openreach (The people who care about the telecoms infrastructure in the UK, who are “separate” from BT….of course they are….) what the story was with my area.
Given the area is West London, you would think that given that Fibre is still in the area (in fact, all streets around me it appears, even Virgin Media are present) and just moving down the road surely would still allow for the faster service to be installed.
But no, it appears not. In their official response to me, they stated that;
Unfortunately your property is not currently included in the network roll-out because after our initial survey, it was established that this cabinet would not be viable for Openreach to upgrade.
But they never indicated anything else as to why. So in essence, unless I banded together a rag tag team of ex-army nutters and some of the neighbours to plan a caper to pay privately the ridiculous price BT would want to actually do the work anyway, crap internet is on the cards for some time. Because of reasons.
The price was forever rising too, undoubtedly for BT to pay for the football it wanted to hit back at Sky with, because everyone loves football. All the time, footy footy footy, all hail the mighty round thing. Given the lack of interest I have for such a thing, at the beginning when I was on BT’s Fibre package, it was a nice bonus add-on that I had on once or twice and then never had to think about again. But now, on the much poorer service and the prospect of having more cash taken away just to keep it, no thank you sir. You can keep your balls.
There have also been more recent issues with connectivity too, so when the opportunity came along to leave without paying penalty charges, you’re damn right I took it, and for a business service too, courtesy of PlusNet (which I know are owned by BT but have tried to do better customer service than BT at least).
Hopefully this will mean that when I happen to be bored enough to do the live streaming of content, it may stop looking like you’re stuck in 1970 watching S4C on a TV you just stole from Radio Rentals. Whether or not this is the case, will remain to be seen.
It’s not been easy to say the least though.
BT still even state that I will owe a ridiculous amount of money when I leave despite the fact that under Ofcom rules, given 30 days notice, I’m free to walk away without paying another penny. Add to the fact that every time someone’s had to change my service, I’ve been without the Internet at home for about two weeks. Let’s see what shenanigans unfolds this time, shall we?
@lordofleisure so we should have better internet next year… Shame it’s the public purse paying for it.
@lordofleisure we suffer same open reach pain. 150 houses with 4mb internet surrounded by superfast. Council & govt now paying BT to upgrade
