Gangnam Style
Hey Sexy Lady, have you done it Gangnam style? Well some people have, as at the time of writing, this YouTube video has had 812,794,421 views, and turned up courtesy of South Korean rapper PSY back in July.
Before we delve into the Gangnam of the matter, yes in a change of pace (which was either writing nothing or just drivel) we’re looking at dance music and therefore normally you wouldn’t be listening to it unless you were either driving through a town center blasting out the music from a sound system which is worth more (and weighs more) than the actual car itself, with your windows wound down, so everyone can hear how much of a c*nt you are, or you were in a nightclub where the DJ, suffering from a bad case of amnesia brought on by sniffing too many air fresheners, would be asking “whose birthday is tonight?” every 3 minutes.
However, the argument is easily countered with: Exactly how often is it that we hear about any music from Korea?
It’s actually one of those things you never really think about until something comes along, how often do we hear music from other countries, let alone music which comes in with huge international success? In the UK, we tend to stick with what we know, and at one time it seemed the vast majority of what we know involved one of two groups:
- Skinny f**kers who have never been out in the sun, wearing old curtains or in the case of the men, wearing clothes designed for a three year old, yet all singing like chronically depressed cats.
- R&B men and women driving expensive things running off bitch juice while on the odd occasion getting jolly upset with other people over who knocked over a pot of jam.
In the video the Psy dances as though he is riding a horse or badly running away while in handcuffs, or having a seizure, not sure which to tell the truth, but in any case, this somehow turned into a global dance craze by all accounts. For someone to do that these days, is pretty impressive.
The video also features the singer of not that many lyrics, reclining on a sun lounger in tight pink shorts (Hey Sexy Lady indeed!), getting lost in an indoor snow storm (at least we hope that’s snow), getting very close with a guy with the biggest manboobs I ever did see, gazing longingly at a girl dancing on an underground train in tight shorts and gesticulating at a woman working out on a beach – in tight shorts.
Oh and dance with someone from health and safety. I assume it was someone from health and safety, given the blinding brightness of the yellow suit.
Having no idea what the hell Gangnam style is, the investigative team at Ooh Sometimes did what any excellent organisation would do to learn the facts about anything and just went to Wikipedia (allowing people to rewrite sh*t about things since 1812) which states that the phrase “Gangnam Style” is a Korean neologism that refers to a lifestyle associated with the Gangnam District of Seoul.
Well I hope that’s all cleared up then.
All in all, for what it is, it’s actually a refreshing change to see someone else give the whole thing a go and not make us want to gather our pitchforks in blood fueled rage. It turns out as well this is not his first video and this song is in fact off his sixth album. Yes, there are others….we can only wonder at what treasures / horrors lay within those discs.
Perhaps just once in a while we should see what the rest of the world can give us in terms of music, even if it’s just a for a laugh, as clearly as this was played up for and it deserves whatever success it can get, given that there is so much other filth in the world to contend with.
PSY, for brightening up Sunday morning, we salute you.
