RAR! And other noises.
Indeed here we at the end of the start of the new week, fresh faced, raring to go…oh who are we kidding?
The last few days have been a bit of a knightmare in terms of trying to plow through writing documentation for the degree, as well playing with the site. I have been in contact with Jide, the man who was responsible for the site look (mostly his work it must be said, i’ve just “tweaked” it here and there) for a couple of pointers to something that’s been bothering me since the change yesterday and we’ll see how that goes.
With the slog set to continue over the next few weeks, I took what is to be one of the last few moments of joy and time-out so to speak to visit a couple of mates from sunny wales to see the new film Cloverfield starring random people.
Yes, it’s another shaky cam thing with people screaming and going oh my god at various points, but fear not. The best thing about it is that it’s like the blair witch s**te that bored me a few years ago (I was the only one it seems) but the fact is, that there is an awful lot more going for it.
For a starters, once it gets going; it’s going.
But first, in the beginning, you have all these people messing around, having fun, all the usual crap which starts rotting your tits off. And frankly when the ground shakes and it’s interupted, it comes as something of a relief. You’ve got all the usual suspects in terms of the old plot, and god only knows why the guy is so insistant on taping everything even when they are in mortal danger, something to show the kids maybe?
And I kept thinking: why are they still there, surely the correct course of action when faced with a certain type of doom would be just get away from those bloody things as quickly as possible, or is that being silly?
Some bits actually made me laugh which I didn’t expect, like how the camera guy was remarking about someone killing homeless people down in the subway while they are all walking through the subway tunnel. He has much to teach me about timing!
There were real geniune moments, when you see things you really don’t expect. I don’t want to spoil any of it if possible, suffice to say there are just flickers of the full onslaught with whatever the thing was, blink and you’ll miss them type things which add the experience but it’s just still about this small group trying to get through it all.
I am most happy to report that the film was a wonderfully different personal approach to the whole godzilla monster attacking things doo-hickey we’ve seen lots of times, and I applaud the film-makers for doing it this way. Some people won’t like the shaky cam thing and at the start, it’s all just bloody annoying but it does come into it’s own later with effect, even though you won’t shake the feeling of “why are you filming this? Run away dammit, that’s an order!”.
It’s not low budget as the effects play out so it’s far better than the blair b*****ks project, you can see that genuine thought has gone into it’s creation and direction. The unknowns actually keep it together quite well which is surprising, and all in all, it’s well worth a viewing, and perhaps even buying the DVD when it comes out.
Word of warning though, it’s not for couples really. Unless you both get off on this sort of thing….which may be scary and maybe not. Who knows in this cosmopolitan world we now live in?
I really had no real idea what this film was about going into it as I did think we were going to see AVP2: The Cash In, but once again I have to yield to my mate Dave’s film choice. Twice in a row now. What ever next?
That’s all for now dear campers, have fun and don’t have nightmares. Just have erotic dreams, failing that, get Sky + installed in your head and catch up with overnight TV from Sky One. Just a thought… 🙂
