Going Postal
The recent Postal Strike started yesterday with lots of people walking out over money and pensions, they are too much or not enough I forget what the main subject was about. The problem is, these days if you are disgruntled in your job you tend to do something about like going and getting another job with better money. If you are old and waiting for retirement, that surely cannot be long off.
So what will the good people at the Post office achieve? Nothing, save for me getting rather annoyed that I have to wait another few days to get hold of the new Jeremy Clarkson book bought online, while other people just go to the shop and buy it or if you are like most people, just go to WHSmiths and read it there. And then they wonder why the Post Office is losing money and therefore they are wanting to cut back on spending what money they do have?
On the plus side, I now have the new Chris Moyles “difficult second book” having rescued it from the post office sorting depot in Oswestry this morning, which was an interesting experience, wandering into the sorting floor because the nice office they have to keep the public out of the way for “security” was closed, so what are you meant to do?
You see an open door, wander through looking for the 3 or 4 people working there who aren’t a member of the union, or they are getting scab money and ask for your lovely luggage containing the goodness you desire. And then they become alarmed that members of the public come along and want their post? Bugger the fact that most business post and normal post is halted for a while causing mild, eh, mildness which doesn’t change anything, I want my other book dammit!
So to those workers, stop your silliness now or I will get bored with it and do something else.
Oh and I stole the title from Terry Prachett. See, the best things in life are stolen.
This is true and I agree, it is an independent business but why is the UK tax payer still paying for it? It just comes across that when it was privatised, a rather large number of share holders seem to have a nice big cut yet services were cut.
Changes need to be made, but the real change is the sacking of 40000 people and employing mostly polish workers. As they are not UK residents they are not covered by minimum wage. It’s really nasty.
Well I do think the union is a bit over the top as strikes don’t work anymore, unless you have the weight behind you and with the invention of email and such, business doesn’t grind to a halt. In the end they end up hurting their selves, what I was driving at is the answer of “get another job” is not always an easy one esp if you have a mortgage to pay and bills to pay
Ohhh sorry 🙂 Well popular doesn’t always means good my good friend 😀
But the sacking of people would have come simply because they are now having to compete with other businesses due the government wanting competition. It’s a business, nothing else and like all businesses these days they have to change or go bust.
I agree the fact that multiple mail companies running the british post would not be a good idea, being honest look what’s happened with the trains. But in truth, the only way they would do anything about the situation is if the company was no longer private.
But the issue I have, albeit a small one is the fact that the Union are dictating their terms and getting people on strike but will achieve nothing. In fact, they are more likely to cut jobs now as a result and use the strike as an excuse. There were still lots of people who worked becuase they have to and can’t afford to lose days’ wages.
The union thinks it can railroad Royal Mail into doing what it wants. To me, this makes things worse. Government Jobs are protected to some extent by unions, but unions hassling a Commerical firm like it’s the old days? I will wait and see what happens.
And lastly, badly written tripe you may think of it mate, but it gets read by many every week in newspapers. And I actually think his method of writing is funny.
To be honest I think you have missed the whole point. Since Royal mail was made private the pension fund has been run into £50million of debt. The restructuring is basically sacking people. They have already sacked thousands of people and the service has gone down and down.
It’s much like the water companies. What is the point of having private water companies. If I live in Wales can I buy my water off Southern water? In an answer, no, because it “doesn’t work like that”.
In the same way is the postal service, the idea of running 10+ different companies to delivery mail would cause utter chaos.
So if it means I have to go without mail for 1 week so they ensure people can protect their jobs and pensions I’m all for it.
Think of it this way, least it’s saving your mind from badly written tripe 😉
